The first wave of new residents starting moving in on Jan. 11, and more than 60 residents total are expected to be living in the community by the end of February.
“It was yesterday I really realized how much the building has come alive,” said Executive Director Margie Veis. “There were ladies getting their nails done in the beauty salon, … there was a dog out in the dog park, there was an art class going on, and activities, there was residents sitting in our living room.”
Last week, Oakmont staff held a “Meet Your Neighbor” block party and barbecue to bring residents together, and with “magical” results, according to Veis.
“It’s not a facility anymore– this is their home, this is their community,” she said, recalling a group of four women who seem to have formed a strong bond already.
“I noticed them at breakfast one day, I noticed them at lunch the next day,” Veis continued. “They’ve already formed this friendship where one of the residents was at the front desk saying, ‘Where are my friends? Have they come down yet?’ So this group of four women who were living in their own homes, isolated, have now– in just a short period of time –connected and built this friendship.”
Located across seven acres of land on Newhall Ranch Road, Oakmont of Santa Clarita is comprised of 80 pet-friendly apartment units, with both independent and assisted living options available.
Residents can enjoy five-star amenities like a salon & day spa, movie theater, fitness center, restaurant-style dining, gardens and walking paths, pet park, wellness center and more.
In addition, a separate wing of the community called Traditions Memory Care is dedicated to meeting the specialized needs of seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
“It’s happening … and it’s just so exciting to be a part of,” Veis said. “It’s a lot of work, that’s for sure, and my team is spending long days, but when you see the result, it is so worth it.”
